Mews Independent Living is located on the site of the former Green
Company, and the original building, which was built in 1879, has
been incorporated into the new construction. In the original building
you will find the original iron pillars incorporated into the
design of the main dining room and library. The exterior brick
walls of the original building are showcased in the comfortable
Bottle Club which overlooks the interior courtyard of the community.
The second floor of the Green Company had a
printing shop equipped with nine presses. Here 5,000,000 almanacs,
printed in English, German, French and Spanish were produced in
1883. On the third floor Mr. Green’s elixers were produced
and there were facilities for bottle washing and storage. “Green’s
Almanac” claimed that the company’s products were
made in one of the finest and most complete laboratories
in America. When manufactured, the elixers were shipped not only
throughout the country, but to all parts of the world. Today,
you will find apartments with the original curved windows on the
second and third floors.
This historic building was the home of the
Green Elixir Company from 1879 until 1946, when the Green family
sold the medicine business to Myers Laboratories.
